Soon after Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion, #LeavingTwitter started trending online. People on the microblogging site started reacting with memes and jokes.

After much speculation which continued for weeks, Tesla boss Elon Musk clinched the coveted deal to buy Twitter. While Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and its board initially tried to resist Musk’s takeover bid, eventually, after deliberations, the decision was taken in the favour of the world's richest person. Soon after the announcement, #LeavingTwitter booked a spot on the trends list. People took to the microblogging site to announce that they are leaving Twitter because they weren’t happy with the takeover. Others also took a dig with jokes and memes which are floating on social media galore.

The internet is currently divided between people supporting Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, while the other section thinks this move to be detrimental.

“Why is #leavingtwitter trending?! I hear the cancel culture and the censorship foot soldiers are panicking. No speech is hate speech. Free speech is absolutely a necessity to the survival of true democracy. Smart move by @elonmusk (sic),” a user wrote.
